You've worked out that a spade isn't going to cut it. The job needs a machine. Now comes the next question: which one? A mini digger is the obvious starting point, but you've seen the 3t midi excavator on the HSS DIY site and you're wondering whether the extra size is worth it, whether it'll actually fit on your project, and whether the hire price difference is significant.

Here's the straight comparison - what each machine does, what it doesn't do, and how to pick the right one without overspeccing or underspeccing the job.

At HSS DIY - The Home of Great Projects - you can book either machine online 24/7, with next day delivery. 'Buy the materials. Hire the tools. One order. All in one place.'

The Key Differences at a Glance

Mini Digger 1.5t at a glance: Weight 1.5t. Dig depth approx. 2.5m. Reach approx. 3.5m. 19L fuel tank (full-day operation). Narrower profile - standard garden gate access. No licence for domestic use. CPCS/NPORS for commercial. From ~£200/day.

3t Midi Excavator at a glance: Weight 3t. Dig depth 2.74m. Reach 4.4m. 45L fuel tank (~10 hrs continuous). Wider - needs open site access or gate clearance. No licence for domestic use. CPCS/NPORS for commercial. From ~£250/day.

Which Machine Is Right for Your Job?

Choose the 1.5t Mini Digger when:

  • Your access is a standard garden gate or side passage (check width before booking)
  • You're digging to 2m or less - pond, drainage run, planting bed clearance, post holes
  • The project is domestic garden work - this machine covers 80% of all domestic excavation jobs
  • You want a machine that's easier to handle if you're operating for the first time
  • Budget matters - lower daily hire rate and lower fuel cost than the 3t

Choose the 3t Midi Excavator when:

  • You have open site access - no gate restriction on the machine reaching your work area
  • You need to dig deeper than 2.5m - foundations, deeper drainage, cellars
  • You're moving significant volume of material and throughput matters more than access
  • It's a commercial groundwork programme - the 3t is the entry point for most commercial site work
  • You need the extra reach (4.4m vs approx 3.5m) for slopes, embankments or wider trenches

The Machines - Book at HSS DIY

🟡  Mini Digger1.5t | 1.5t | Dig depth ~2.5m | Standard garden access

The default choice for the majority of domestic garden projects. Manoeuvrable, capable and far easier to position in confined spaces than the 3t. 19L tank for all-day operation. Dozer blade for light grading. No licence for domestic use; CPCS/NPORS for commercial sites.

Hire Mini Digger 1.5t

🔴  3t Midi Excavator | 3t | Dig depth 2.74m | Reach 4.4m | Open access required

For volume groundwork, deeper foundations and commercial programmes. Full ROPS/FOPS cab. 45L tank for approximately 10 hours continuous work. More throughput per day than the 1.5t, but needs open site access and requires CPCS/NPORS on all commercial sites.

Hire 3t Midi Excavator

🔵  Micro Excavator 0.75t | 0.75t | Approx. 750mm wide | Tight access specialist

If neither the 1.5t nor the 3t fits your access route, this is the machine. Narrow enough for most garden gates and passages. Capable in soft to medium soil for ponds, drains and clearance. No licence for domestic use.

Hire Micro Excavator 0.75t

How to Check Access Before You Book

  • Step 1: Measure the narrowest point of your gate, passage or access route at its tightest point - not just the widest
  • Step 2: Check the machine width on the product page. The micro 0.75t is approximately 750mm, the 1.5t is wider. The 3t requires open access in most configurations
  • Step 3: If the machine width is close to your access width, factor in the tracks extending slightly beyond the body and allow for operator error getting through - there's no prize for being right by 20mm
  • Step 4: Check the access route isn't just wide enough but also clear of overhead obstructions for the machine height and cab height

The Decision in One Sentence

If you have standard garden gate access and a domestic project under 2.5m deep - go with the 1.5t mini digger. If you have open site access and need more depth, reach or throughput - go with the 3t.

If neither fits your access or your project, the micro excavator 0.75t and the 5t excavator are both available at HSS DIY to cover the range either side. And if you're still not sure, the live chat team on hss.mom can help you pick the right machine without you having to guess.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I do a standard garden project with a 1.5t mini digger rather than a 3t?

In most cases, yes - and the 1.5t is often the better choice for domestic garden work because it's more manoeuvrable, easier to access through a standard gate, and kinder on your lawn and garden beds given the lower ground pressure. The 3t has more raw capability, but if the job is a garden pond, a drainage run or a straightforward landscaping clearance, the 1.5t is the right machine and there's no practical benefit to the larger one.

Does the 3t excavator need a different licence to operate?

For domestic private use, neither machine requires a licence. For commercial sites, both require a CPCS or NPORS card - but it's the same card category (180° excavator) for both the 1.5t and the 3t. The machine weight doesn't change the card requirement; you need the relevant excavator card regardless of which size you're operating. Check CPCS card validity and ensure it covers excavator operation before any commercial site work.

How much more does it cost to hire a 3t excavator compared to a 1.5t mini digger?

As a rough guide, a 1.5t mini digger hire starts from around £200/day and the 3t midi starts from around £250/day. The difference narrows on weekly hire rates. Fuel consumption is also higher on the 3t - the 45L tank is larger than the 1.5t's 19L, though the 3t also works faster, so the comparison per cubic metre of material moved isn't straightforward. Always verify live pricing at hss.mom - rates vary by location, hire period and availability.

Can a 3t excavator fit through a standard garden gate?

Unlikely for a standard 1.8m fence gate. The 3t midi excavator requires site access rather than garden gate access for most configurations. If your project area is only reachable through a standard fence gate, the micro excavator (0.75t, approx. 750mm wide) or the 1.5t mini digger are the machines to consider. Measure your narrowest access point before booking any machine - checking access width is one of the most commonly skipped pre-hire steps.

What about a 5t excavator - when would I need that instead of a 3t?

The 5t excavator sits above the 3t in terms of digging force, reach and throughput. It's the right machine when a 3t isn't getting through the ground fast enough - harder substrates, deeper cut depths, or volume commercial programmes where the additional power and bucket capacity makes a meaningful difference to how much gets done in a working day. For most domestic and light commercial jobs, the 3t is sufficient. Discuss your specific requirements with the HSS DIY team if you're uncertain.

Is the 3t excavator harder to operate than a 1.5t mini digger?

The controls are broadly similar - both use standard ISO or SAE joystick configuration. The 3t requires more spatial awareness because it's a heavier machine with greater reach and more momentum. First-time operators are better starting on the 1.5t, which is more forgiving in tight or confined spaces. If you're moving up from a mini digger to a 3t for the first time, HSS Training at hsstraining.com runs operator courses covering all machine sizes.
